Fonias is a well-known proper name in Samothraki. It's the name of an important river, of a tower and the beer produced here.
The river Fonias crosses the northern side of the island. It flows into the sea 18 km away from Kamariotissa (20 minutes by car), beyond Therma and the two campings.
Near its mouth, there's a quiet and secluded beach with gray rocks and blue waters. There are no amenities to speak of, but it's a popular fishing spot for the locals.
There's a medieval tower to one of its sides, built by Gateluzzi to fortify the island.
Things to see nearby
Right by the beach, on the other side of the main road that follows the northern shore, there's a parking lot that marks the start of the path to the waterfalls and vathres of Fonias.
Taverns in the area
On the side of the road that's closer to the sea, across from the start of the path, there's a taverna called I Gefira tou Fonia in a green courtyard full of hydrangea and colorful decorations.
Accommodation close by
The closest guesthouses (Ktima Holoway and Archondissa Beach Hotel) are on the same road, a few kilometers away from Therma, just before the campings.
